Look. Let me put it this way: Tracing is only okay when you get the original artist's permission. I can respect anyone who traces, so long as they respect the artists who took that photo/drew that picture/etc.
Did you get the permission of that esteemed Japanese company and/or manga-ka to use that anime image? ..No?
Then..DON'T TRACE IT.
Respect their rights and originality as artists! It's one thing to have fun with art, and then it's another to disrespect them.
"But I suck at proportions!"
Here's a fun and easy solution.
Pick up a pencil. And DRAW.
"It's okay! They haven't complained."
Ever think that they don't know? I doubt they troll deviantART on a regular basis.
"You're taking all the fun out of it!"
Maybe to you, but I don't know. I always found originality even more fun.
I don't even know when this whole trend of tracing bases started. Probably with that KiSS thing. But, i;'m pretty sure that all bases used to be handdrawn. Oh..those were the days.. ;_;
-- That's me lower right. When the photographer took my picture he asked me to act naturally, so I yelled at him to stop disgracing his family and get a real job.
bases have always been traced. Right back to the very original prep base, that one from all the very original dollmakers was traced off of a picture of, I think, Marilyn Monroe. It is only now that we as dollers know better which is why it is so difficult to erase this concept of tracing to make a base.
I got rid of ALL my trace bases a while ago. They were so popular; as are most trace bases. I didn't care how popular they were; I deleted them, anyway.
It shouldn't be about whether they "suck" or not; it should be that YOU are proud of them, because you put the effort into making them unique.
Who knows? I think tracing has just always existed, and there will always be at least one lazy cop-out who traces so they can get out of it the easy way.
very true (im going myself here, though i rarely use anime/manga images for bases, i tend to use them for personal use now ^-^) i usually use 's images, she has given me permission to use her ones >w<

Really? You mean those tiny bases were traced as well? Huh. Come to think of it, there are quite a few of those prep bases that have anime poses.
Don't know why I never realized that before.

Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 5 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.

As of September 2009 =ImaginaryRosse joined the project and will be helping us out with the weekly choices. While things have changed over time, the essence of the newsletter is still the same.
